Poverty and disadvantage in the UK

Approximately a quarter of Britain's population lives in poverty. In practical terms this means many people struggle to survive on low incomes or lack the self-confidence or qualifications to secure employment or fulfil their aspirations. Facts that illustrate the depth and breadth of poverty in Britain include:
  • 9.5 million people cannot afford adequate housing
  • 12 million people who are in low income jobs struggle to make ends meet
  • A third of children go without one of the things they need like three meals a day, toys or adequate clothing.
  • One in four 19 year-olds fails to achieve basic level qualifications
  • One in six older people goes a whole week without any contact with friends, family and neighbours.
Many of these problems are concentrated in deprived neighbourhoods, such as Tower Hamlets in London. The Execution Charitable Trust focuses its support on multi-purpose community organisations that work in deprived neighbourhoods.
