Where UEW operates

The United Estates of Wythenshawe (UEW), Manchester, works in the most deprived housing estates in England, where crime rates are double the national average, as is the unemployment rate. Other problems experienced by residents include poor health, low levels of education and limited local facilities.

About UEW's activities

UEW was established in 1996 by a group of local people who were concerned about the lack of social and recreational facilities in the community. UEW secured a vandalised Chapel to house the charity's activities and transformed it into a vibrant community facility which includes a gym, a crèche, and a community café. In addition to offering a range of recreational activities, the charity also assists local people create enterprises, helping to secure jobs and new facilities for local residents. UEW is particularly proud of its ability to support hard-to-reach groups, thereby reducing the social and economic costs of crime.

How the Execution Charitable Trust is helping UEW to enhance its results

Having grown very organically so far, responding to the needs, ideas and aspirations of local people and staff, UEW plans to make a step change in its development to enhance and measure the results of its work. To assist this step-change, in addition to providing financial support to UEW, the Execution Charitable Trust has offered to invest in expert consultancy support to help UEW develop a viable business plan, a performance management system and a marketing strategy. This programme of support should strengthen the work of UEW, helping it become more self-sustainable through income generating activities and ultimately improving the results of its work.
