About FARE
FARE is a grassroots charity operating in Easterhouse, near Glasgow.
It was established in 1989 in response to the lack of support and opportunities in the local community,
especially for young people. It improves life on the estate by offering activities that improve people aspirations, enhance peoples standards of living, and tackle territorialism and related violence.
The charity uses youth clubs, sport and art activities, holidays and adult mentors to engage with children
and young people.
FAREs mini-olympics
One of FAREs most successful projects involved organising a mini Olympics in 2004 which brought
together 400 children from 15 local primary schools to participate in sporting events. The aim was
to promote friendship through sport in order to prevent gang fighting. Feedback from local schools
was very positive and FAREs work was regarded as an important first step in tackling the long-term
issue of territorialism. The local authority has been so impressed that it has decided to incorporate
this event into its annual athletics programme.
How the Execution Charitable trust is supporting FARE to enhance its results
The Execution Charitable Trust (ECT) has supported FARE since 2003. Initially it awarded FARE a grant to
cover the costs of a fundraiser in order to give the Chief Executive more time to concentrate on running
the charity rather than securing funding. Since 2004, ECT has awarded FARE unrestricted funding which has
strengthened the capacity of the charity to respond flexibly and effectively to local needs.
FARE is currently located in a tenement building of six flats, which the council has struggled to let out
due to drug-related deaths. The charity plans to move to a nearby purpose built centre in the near future.
ECT plans to assist FARE with making this step change so it can expand the scale and scope of its work.
